چکیده

The purpose of this report is to describe what progress was made in defining and explaining the phenomenon of NQR and to stress some functional roles of this type of release, as based on our own data and other observations.

Long release latencies are increased by acetylcholine at frog endplate.

Uni-quantal endplate currents (EPCs) were recorded extracellularly at the frog neuromuscular synapse and their latency dispersions expressed as P(90) were estimated in the presence of acetylcholine. Stimulation-evoked EPCs with long release latencies increased in number when acetylcholine was applied. P90, which is designated as the interval between the minimal synaptic delay and the time at wh...

Aberrant morphology and residual transmitter release at the Munc13-deficient mouse neuromuscular synapse.

In cultured hippocampal neurons, synaptogenesis is largely independent of synaptic transmission, while several accounts in the literature indicate that synaptogenesis at cholinergic neuromuscular junctions in mammals appears to partially depend on synaptic activity. To systematically examine the role of synaptic activity in synaptogenesis at the neuromuscular junction, we investigated neuromusc...

Counting quanta: Direct measurements of transmitter release at a central synapse

Contradictory hypotheses regarding the nature of synaptic transmission in the CNS have arisen from indirect methods of quantal analysis. In this study, we directly count the quanta released following nerve stimulation to examine synaptic transmission at a fast glutamatergic synapse in the mammalian auditory brainstem. Our results demonstrate the relationship between spontaneous and nerve-evoked...

Structure/function assessment of synapses at motor nerve terminals.

The release of transmitter at neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) of the opener muscle in crayfish is quantal in nature. This NMJ offers the advantage of being able to record quantal events at specific visually identified release sites, thus allowing measurement of the physiological parameters of vesicle release and its response to be directly correlated with synaptic structure. These experiments tak...

Non-quantal release of acetylcholine at a developing neuromuscular synapse in culture.

Local, pulsed application of d-tubocurarine at neuromuscular synapses in embryonic Xenopus nerve-muscle culture resulted in a transient hyperpolarization of muscle membrane potential. Miniature endplate potentials (MEPPs) were abolished during the hyperpolarization and recovered after the return of resting membrane potential. The magnitude of hyperpolarization was independent of the frequency o...
